The secretary's subtle rape remark

Remember when Larry snuck into the countess's house to retrieve an invitation for Elliot, the Secretary quipped she was hoping he snuck into the home to take advantage of her. I was shocked, but this is from another era. Society people felt they were immune from criminal charges regarding sex crimes, in fact they still do.

Anyhow the secretary's joke was in bad taste. Poor lady, probably does not have a social life.

I don't think so. She knew Larry & what sort of man he was, so she could make a joke like that & not worry about his taking it the wrong way. Look at the way he smiles back at her, an affectionate & amused smile, certainly aware that she was fond of him, as he was fond of her (in a non-sexual way). She's basically saying that she wouldn't mind a closer relationship with him. He acknowledges it & gently deflects it.

reply

You are right, I took it the wrong way. Maybe they dated for awhile, or were just good friends.

Still, in these times, we are more aware of such things, so I can understand your misgivings.
