Was Nancy having an affair with her boss? (spoiler alert)

Are we to assume that Nancy was, contrary to her protestations, having an affair with her boss? The Robert Mitchum character thought she was, and of course he turns out to be right about her. She's a sociopath who tells pathological lies about almost everything.

Plus, the boss's wife is in a wheelchair, and I think audiences back then would assume that meant she couldn't perform sexually. (Modern audiences know otherwise).

A related question: why was Nancy in the boss's bedroom? Was it to steal the locket, engage in some hanky panky with the boss, or both?

The locket? I think you're confused. As a child Nancy is unfairly accused of stealing a locket. She didn't do it but is forced to confess to it.

I don't believe Nancy is intimately involved with her boss. He seems very devoted to his wife. I think she went into the bedroom to steal the wife's necklace. When her boss walks in and catches her in the act, she kills him.

The real question is, does she actually realize what's she's doing; lies about it later; then forgets. Or, is she a kleptomaniac to the nth degree who goes into some sort of trance when the sparkle of a diamond hits her eye. Then, once she has it in her clutches, she doesn't have any idea what happened.
