About Mary (spoilers)

Mary lived a wonderful life! She received everything she wanted including George, the house, kids and she was able to keep it all when it was threatened by soliciting the townsfolk to donate money.

Meanwhile, George lived a crappy life.

George didn't live a crappy life. He just believed it was because he didn't do what he once thought was his dream.

reply

Yeah, that was the point. George had a wonderful wife, family, friends, etc. In the end, he realizes he was living the dream.

George gave up his own goals for others. Perhaps noble, but he hated working in the bank, wanted to attend college, live in a less drafty house and see the world. At the end, his life was still crappy, but he learned how to accept it. For instance, being grateful for the broken-down, drafty house. That sounds like sweet lemons rationalization.

His only satisfaction was that he helped others to have a nice life while he had a crappy life. He even helped Clarence to finally get his wings.

Mary sacrificed the honeymoon, but that could've been more George's desire. Mary was nice like George, but she fulfilled all her goals in life while George achieved none of his own.

I'm with Al Bundy on this one.

because his perception of what was REALLY good was wrong. thus the movie.
did you even WATCH this movie?

"REALLY good"

Sacrificing all of one's own goals in life for others isn't healthy. What's wrong with wanting a job that you enjoy and a house that's not drafty? Are you aware that Mary didn't consult with George about where they should live? That's selfish. Was George a doormat? They could've at least lived in a new house in Bailey Park!

I watched it only a quadrillion times! Absolute classic! This has to be the best Christmas-time movie. Great plot, original, memorable dialogue and wonderful characters!

Misery Index: George = Al Bundy

If a man can’t be happy in life when he has a partner like the beautiful and saintly Mary and healthy kids, then there is no hope for him.
