It's a Wonderful Life on the stage

I went with my family years ago to see It's a Wonderful Life on the stage. It's a Wonderful Life is my all time favorite movie. Nothing could ever compare to it. But the play was very good. There were, of course, some differences. Some of the differences were interesting. For one, there was singing. Sam Wainwright was a little different. When Harry came back married and had a job with Ruth's father, he had no intention of taking over at the Bailey Building and Loan. George got mad at him and yelled at him in the play. Mary, in the play, wasn't a brunette like Donna Reed. She was a beautiful blonde. There was no Mr. Gower in the play. The most interesting and clever change for the stage was how they had George about to step in front of a train instead of jumping off a bridge. Clarence shows up, like he did in the movie, and he steps on the tracks like he's going to commit suicide and George saves him. The train effect in the play was great. Everyone applauded after that scene. It took a lot of getting used to someone else playing George Bailey, but I was able to warm up to the actor after a while. My family felt the same way. I don't know when or where they will show this production again, but it's definitely worth seeing. My family and I all enjoyed it very much.

I went around 2009 to a production at the Stoneham (Mass) Theater. Fantastic! It's a small town like Bedford Falls, so that just added to the overall atmosphere.

There is another stage production which tells the story as a "radio play" such as was common in the 30'sand 40's. About five performers played all the parts, and we could see the "behind the scenes" activities such as sound effects. The production was even interrupted a couple of times for "commercials", using the techniques of the times and the same kind of jingles they would have used.
It was called "It's A Wonderful Life -- a Live Radio Play". It's been playing in local theaters for the past few years. It is a total delight to see and if you get the chance to see it, I highly recommend it to you.
