The opening bell is one my fav shots in cinema

2016 has pretty much scuked for pop culture & all the rest... that bell always resets my soul, triggers reflection, gonna be real nice when I watch the movie again a few weeks' time.

I remember watching it in 2001 & thinking, the world really isn't ending even if it feels like it is. There's genuinely some clockwork regularity to that opening bell which instantly puts everything & anything into macro perspective.

You're right. There is something magical about that bell at the beginning. I think it actually is the bumper for Liberty Films (liberty bell, I guess), but nonetheless it really stands out as part of this film's intro sequence. Not to get too philosophical but I think that because we humans invented bells so many thousands of years ago as a way to call people to gathering places, there is something built into our DNA now that makes us automatically respond to them.
