Did George Bailey Really Do anything Wrong?

I watched the full movie last night for the first time in a long time.

Besides Uncle Billy misplacing funds I didn't see what George might have done.

Don't know what I'm not seeing.

George was the President of the company (or Executive Secretary as they put it) so he was ultimately responsible for overseeing the operations. Those misplaced funds would've ultimately subjected him to a criminal investigation and potentially imprisonment if Uncle Billy decided to play dumb. That was back then. In today's world, George would have simply just resigned and taken a huge golden parachute bonus while leaving the board and the shareholders to clean up the mess.

reply

So are you saying back then someone who is charge of a bank would of taken the fall because because of some employees carelessness?

reply

George cared alot for uncle billy and would haven taken the fall for it. look at the scene with George asking mr potter for a loan.

reply

Have you ever heard the expression: "The buck stops here?" The buck stopped with George because he was in charge. If something happened it was his responsibility.

Uh I get that but it's one thing if someone intentionally does something wrong but it's quite another thing if someone makes a mistake.

reply

Bank examiners don't care about mistakes. It is the owner's responsibility to make sure the cash is accounted for and put controls in place so the money doesn't get lost or else it's presumed the owner stole it.

reply

Exactly. That much cash should've been counted & recounted at their establishment & the bank alike by a second employee.

George himself made a huge mistake too, by not firing the senile old coot on the grounds that he was not mentally competent enough to perform his fiscal duties properly.

reply

By the time Uncle Billy lost the $8000, it had been well established that George Bailey was a solid, unselfish man who would do his damnedest to help others. He would not duck out on his responsibility and let Billy take the fall. I also question the notion that Potter would really risk a perjury rap by swearing out a false warrant. Who knows what the sheriff did after the happy ending at the Bailey house? He could have filed a complaint at the D.A.'s office and secured a warrant for Potter's arrest on a perjury charge!

reply

back then he would he would have just resigned, george was the exception for being honest.

reply

George did something wrong by being negligent enough to let a senile old coot handle huge wads of cash.

reply

not illegal, just bad judgement.

reply

No, George did not do anything illegal. The B&L was $8000 short. An investigation most likely would have accounted for the cash up to the time uncle Billy gathered it for a deposit. The question is would a court believe Uncle Billy lost the money or believe he stashed it somewhere saying he lost it as an excuse.
