Just bothers me that Potter

...still kept the $8K

"Vive la mort, vive la guerre, vive le sacre mercenaire."

Yeah, Potter was a tool. But I don't think Potter had any real use for the $8K itself. The angst and damage it caused George and the B&L when it went missing is what was important to him.

For what it's worth, I've met a lot of truly miserable people in my almost 60 years, and believe me when I tell you that just being themselves is punishment in itself.

Is very bad to steal Jobu's rum. Is very bad.

He is a low life piece of scum. Deserves to get beaten to death. 

Did you see the Saturday Night Live version of the ending for It's a Wonderful Life?

So funny. The scene has Billy remembering the money and that Potter kept it, so they all went to Potter's house and beat the crap out of him.

reply

Yeah, that was great.

reply

That was one of the things that Frank Capra got flak about. Potter keeps the money and also he never gets his commupins.

reply

Bothers me more that his stooge said nothing. If he had shown up at George's with that $8k at the ending, it would've landed better.

I came to this board to find this comment so I could agree with it.

I always go back to what Scrooge's nephew says of Scrooge, "His offenses carry their own punishment." The same goes for Potter, who spends Christmas Eve alone in his office, $8,000 richer, and nothing to do but count it.

I used to think I knew everything about the world. Now I just know that it's round.

Potter was building his chain described in another Chirstmas story with that money.

"But I was so much older then, I'm younger than that now"

I saw that the Potter character was (erroneously) included on a recent list of cinematic villains who "triumph" in the end. I don't see how he wins anything. Potter's reaction may have not been depicted after George is bailed out by his friends and townspeople, but his plan to ruin Bailey failed with a resounding thud. In the end, George is truly the richest man in Bedford Falls, and Potterville never materializes. Movies don't need to always spoon feed audiences every minute detail.

reply

Unlike most movie villains he does seem to get off quite easily, usually most movie villains get beat up, arrested, terminated, etc, at least he didn't succeed in ruining George's reputation.
