Spooks scrawled on wall

I've watched this film every year for thirty years and noticed last night an oddity.
In the WWII montage, when George Bailey comes home and we see the ball on the handrail come off for the first time, behind him, written in crayon is the word 'spooks'
Any thoughts why?
It could be a message to the fbi?
A racist slur? (Very much doubt this)
Or something else?
I like these films where you notice something new every few viewings.

I would guess during that time period it would be a reference to a haunting entity.

The Essential It's a Wonderful Life by Michael Willian is a scene-by-scene guide to the movie. It's filled with information and trivia like this. Graffiti with the word "spooks" and also Mr. Potter's name can be seen in the house before the remodel. According to the book, the spooks graffiti is referring to the Old Granville House being haunted.

Spooks is an older slang term for ghosts.
