They should have tracked down Potter and beaten the crap out of him
This is why the SNL version is superior.

Stay single and happy my friends

Thanks for the link - that's great! A little over the top maybe, but the ending that Potter deserved.

I got an old SNL Christmas compilation VHS and that fake extended ending is definitely the highlight of the video.

THAT is when SNL was actually funny unlike anything from the past ten years.
Except there was no reason to suspect Potter.
shareI'm sure you're only joking...
It's a Wonderful Life is so great because of its intensely positive message. It might be nice to see an old, nasty man get beaten up, but that would simply not fit in with the uplifting and happy film we have today.
The best revenge you can ever bestow on a person is to simply ignore them!
There would be no need to. Once Potter found out the town's people had come through for George and that once again he had failed to best the Bailey's he probably had a coronary and that little problem took care of itself.
shareIf they did that, Mr. Potter would have won, because subjecting Potter to mob justice would truly turn Bedford Falls into Pottersville. The people of Bedford Falls would become just what Potter has called them, discontented rabble. They define themselves by being decent and kind. By that metric, Mr. Potter is already the poorest man in town, and the least successful, given his failure time and again to remake the town into being just as ugly and spiteful as he is.
I used to think I knew everything about the world. Now I just know that it's round.
It wouldn't have happened because no one knew Potter had the money. Everyone just assumed Uncle Billy lost the money. Besides the people of Bedford Falls were too good for that, no matter how much they despised Potter.
shareA better ending is Potter's assistant feels guilty for having helped steal the money and ends up going to the police to testify against Potter. The police end up getting Potter to confess about stealing the money and Mr. Potter ends up spending the rest of what's left of his life behind bars. Then dies and nobody in Bedford falls goes to the funeral.
