I have never read the Novel, so I didn't know which one is follow closely to Novel but I loved both film (this Jean Cocteau version and Disney version)
For Cocteau version was really wonderful, just some scene was shortage which I think it could give more of explanation ,I really love the scene that Belle given water to the beast and he drink water in her hand.
There's not really an original novel, but you can easily find a translation the French retellings online. There's the original version by Gabrielle-Suzanne Barbot de Villeneuve, and the more popular adaptation by Jeanne Marie Le Prince de Beaumont.
Of course, the basic plot of a beautiful woman and an unknown or bestial suitor is very popular. The oldest version that I know of is the story of Enkidu, found in the Mesopotamian epic of Gilgamesh.
I did accidentally kill her father when I went to pick her up for the first date. AWKWARD!
Considering the Epic of Gilgamesh is the oldest known fictional story in history, it's kinda tough to find something to outdate that.
Edit: I should clarify so I don't look stupid. It's a mythical story based on a real king, so it's not entirely fictional.
I think it is the best movie ever made. Just my opinion of course.
It's really underappreciated though.
One man's trash is another man's treasure.
...and don't you forget it!
This is my second personal favorite film. Magical movie-making, a fairy tale for adults. I didn't care for the Disney film, probably because I have such a love for this version. I do like many of the early Disney films (Snow White, Pinocchio, Fantasia, Dumbo and Bambi), but I didn't really take to the Disney version of Beauty, perhaps because I saw it as an adult, while the others I had seen as a child. But I highly recommend the Cocteau version, and also his Orpheus.
shareThis movie is just so beautiful. *___* I love it.
shareI'm watching it right now on TV, its really good! The cinimatography is beutiful despite the lack of color. I really didn't like the disney version, most of the disney fariy tales were really hollow and it makes me mad considering how deep the original stories were, so I really prefer this one to the Disney. Most movies from the 1940's are great but I love this one in particular!
And now Im being followed by rocks
Your arms off!No it isnt.
Would you like a... shave?
This film is a fine example of just how pathetically unreliable the imdb top 250 list is. It's comfortably one of the best 250 films ever made.
