If you like this movie, then check out the 1978 Czech version....

Panna a netvor (Beauty and the Beast) is a 1978 Czech adaptation of the fairy tale. It's darker and creepier than the Cocteau one, and in my opinion, I think it's a superior film. However, not very many people have seen it or even heard about it, so it's never received the recognition that it deserves.

Wow the Czech adaption looks amazing. I'm definitely going to watch this, thanks! I'm going to try not to compare the two, since La Belle et la Bête is already one of my favourite films.

Hi walt-mozart - I watched the Czech film. Certainly a darker, earthier and more violent take on the fairy tale, and worth a look. While there were elements I liked, I missed the enchantment, the stunning cinematography, the sumptuous costumes and magic of the French version.
