Doc's hat

Has anyone noticed when the first crews are being sent to Bataan and Doc is passing around his hat to collect cigarettes the initials 'JP' are clearly visible? I don't recall Doc having a name in the picture, so could these be Jack's way of marking his hat for the movie?

reply

Doc was played by an actor named Jack Pennick (JP), who was in virtually every John Ford movie ever made. I assume this was some kind of inside joke on the set or that Pennick put his initials on his hat to identify it. Pennick, by the way , was an ex-military man who was the technical advisor for Ford on military matters, such as marching and close order drill.I hope this helps.

Jack Pennick was a CPO in the Navy in WW II, in John Ford's Field Photographic Branch. He was awarded the Silver Star for gallantry. Maybe it was his own hat....

Why was he collecting cigarettes ?
