Every Southern farmer grows collard greens, mustard greens, kale, and Swiss chard in the winter. My mother-in-law grew up on a farm in Tennessee with no electricity at the same time frame of this movie. She told me the only thing they bought at the store was flour, salt, and coffee - they produced everything else. And then we have Betty Field with perfectly coiffured hair working in a cotton field. I don't think you would find a woman that looked like her as a sharecroppers wife.
