That his mother was incredibly insensitive? Most people would have had the tea and scones without saying something immediately about her looks. Of course, then we wouldn't have the movie plot full circle, would we?

The mother pissed me off! She couldn't just be cool about it. You're right though, it moved the story along.

...and her husband! They deserved each other. haha
The first time the mother and her husband came to the cottage, the husband was ready to leave the moment he got there. "Well, we've done the best we can. Let's go!"

They were both awful, having no regard for her son's feelings. Instead, she made it all about what she perceived as her loss.
I thought Spring Byington rather miscast in this. She was normally associated with very sympathetic characters.
