A rumor I heard about this film

Is it or is it not true that around the year 2000 Cher bought the rights to this film and she wants to make a remake but several things have to be taken care of first?

According to "Totally Uninhibited" (unauthorized Cher bio):

She bought the rights in 1976 and planned to executive produce the film as well as star in it. The twist is that she would play the Robert Young role, and as a singer instead of a pilot. Her potential leading man would have been either Gary Busey or Jon Voight.

Great info. Thanks for sharing. Sort of fitting that, having an interest in that story, she would want to make "Mask".

Gary Busey?? Ugh. No. Just no.

I heard this is one of Cher's favorite movies and she wanted to re-make it. I'm sorry she never did.

I know I'm quite late to post. But this thread reminded me how similar Cher's character was in "Moonstruck". They tried to make her plain with gray hair and a bun. Then she gets a makeover and becomes an 80's vixen. Nicholas Cage's character also has a physical defect (like Oliver in this movie) because he is missing his hand. And their falling in love makes them both better, more confident people.

Maybe Cher got having a plain Jane makeover in a movie out of her system. But I would of loved to see her remake of this film without Gary Busey or John Voight. Warren Beatty would of been good made up to be plain and then appearing handsome. He was still good looking well into his fifties (and I still find him handsome). Barbara Streisand also does the same Plain Jane thing in "The Mirror Has Two Faces".
