Is anyone familiar with the DVD collection metioned in the subject line of my post? It's to be released on May 2 and includes the movie who's board I am posint on. I am just wondering if anyone has heard whether or not this collection includes quality versions of the films. It's at Amazon.com for $14.99 and includes 10 movies. That's a heck of a deal, but I'm worried about the old saying "You get what you pay for." If anyone has heard a review on this collection or knows that the movies are of a watchable quality. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!
I'm watching Detour from that very collection. It's a 5-disc set with 2 movies on each disc (same side). I have only got as far as Detour and the first, Scarlet Street, but it is the same old same old = no nice remastering. I'm stuck in Byron Bay, Australia, and there's nothing Noir to buy or rent, so I'll make do with this for a while. But the quality, as I said, is poor. (Even so, the set has The Strange Love of Martha Ivers, which has a great script and terrific acting.)
For $10 Australian, I picked up a 4 disk set (double sided DVDs) "Cinema Noir; 20 Great Film Noir Movies" at my local '$2' shop - decent transfers - and sound - which so often is unbearable at this price. The films included were:
The Second Woman 1951 Jigsaw 1949 The Moonstone 1934 Impact 1949 Algiers 1938 D.O.A. 1950 Inner Sanctum 1948 The Hitch-hiker 1953 Scarlet Street 1945 Kansas City Confidential 1952 Quicksand 1950 Detour 1945 Suddenly 1954 They Made me a Criminal 1939 Too late for tears 1949 Eyes in the Night 1942 He Walked by Night 1948 Midnight Manhunt 1945 The Strange Love of Martha Ivers 1946 and finally, The Stranger 1946.
I've watched about five of them so far and usually I run away from these sets as the quality is poor, but I've been impressed with these ones. It was great to see Mickey Rooney in Quicksand. Good value for ten dollars. No catalogue numbers given, but if Australian readers look in those cheap shops, I'm sure they'll still find it in a boxed set.
I also picked up this set at a Newsagent for $10.00 AU, and I have flicked through all of the titles briefly. From my impressions, Quicksand, The Stranger and Impact all look very good. I watched Detour all the way through, and it to looked very good. D.O.A however, looked excellent considering, similar quality to my MGM release of "Sweet Smell of Success".
All other transfers looked similar to general public domain DVDs. Definitely worth my Ten Dollars. For international buyers, I have noticed a couple of people selling it on Ebay.

Haven't we gone down this road before? I paid twenty dollars for my copy of The Ultimate Film Noir Collection and have found it well worth price at twice that amount. The movies are good quality prints as far as I can see.
