when he wanted to prevent her from calling , he could just cut the wire..that would probably be more effective then just pull it..

Yes, he would do bad things and then in his craziness imagine up that something sort of similar in which he was blameless had happened.

There is no information actually coming from the movie that indicates or even suggests that Al's story is unreliable and that what he says and what we see is not what really happened. You are just making stuff up.
