I liked "Remember the Night" much better, but Fred MacMurray's black servant there was an offensive bit of comic relief. Black actors came off better here, including a black woman delivery person & a waiter (?) who was portrayed as literate and smart (the bit where the actual cook asked about the meaning of a word).
The way day-care was made into an amusing complication also has feminist connotations. Of course, women in the workplace during WWII was a big thing.
Notwithstanding the fact that the factory women were German and, of course, this was World War II era!

shareMy mother (of Italian descent) grew up in a predominately German neighborhood in the Midwest during WWII. It was populated by many Germans who left after WWI. She told me that they often stressed that they were "fun-loving, beer-brewing, jovial Bavarians" unlike the "trouble-making Prussians" who were accused of "shaming all Germany". LOL

That too, it a racist remark. However, all you have to do is watch any mainstream sitcom to see actors portray dumb white people, particularly fathers. Also, BET is full of sitcoms skewering Caucasians. The pendulum is swinging in the opposite direction these days, and will breed resentment just like it did in the past.
