What is the purpose of the painfully obvious placement of a gigantic clock on the building outside Joan Bennetts apartment? Was this just a gimmick to hook the viewer into thinking it had some meaning when there really was none?

The purpose of the clock, actually there were several clocks, was to show the passage of time just like in real life.
