Noir: the genre of over-reaction

He should've taken the victim's wallet & dumped him on street out front: A mugging gone wrong; no one's looking for a middle-aged professor as the perpetrator. Besides, if any evidence does connect him to the body, it would still do it, no matter how far away it was found. Might as well make an easy job of it.

he should have put the scissors in the guy's hand and called it a suicide

reply

He should have just manned up and called the cops claiming the truth, self defense, which I think realistically he would have done, if it wasn't a nightmare, during such episodes which it is natural to overstate fears and reactions.

reply

"Self defense" maybe, but at that moment he could see his career, family life, and personal reputation going down the drain.

Of course, transporting a dead body in the open in the back seat of his car wasn't exactly the smart thing to do, either....

reply

He didn't know the woman, or the victim. He could have just walked out and never looked back. Of course, then we wouldn't have a movie and wouldn't be having this discussion.

I agree with you ethereal-cloud. This is why at first I thought this movie was stupid. But as I continued to watch ,loving the director's other films,I waited for someone to react like a normal person. The ending made sense.

reply

If he did that with the wallet, something would still go wrong.

He wasn't an expert on hiding dead bodies. He thought that tossing it far away would do the trick. This professor wasn't a professional killer.
