I missed the 1st quarter of the movie & I had to leave the room when Fanny got sick. Can someone pls explain to me what her sickness was? How could it make her physically deteriorate the way she did? & how did she get sick?

Tnx in advance for any help w/ the above mentioned questions.

The ravaging illness that Fanny gets is diphtheria. She gets it after getting drenched on a very choppy sailboat ride with one of her young admirers.

According to WebMD diptheria is bacterial and acquired by unsafe contact with someone already infected. It is very rare in the United States, thanks to immunization, so be careful who you drink after!
