Bette Davis 'acting' beautiful.
There's a famous story about the great actor Spencer Tracy that has him not wanting to go through the hassle of pasting on an uncomfortable fake beard during shooting every day. "Forget it," he tells the director, "I'll just act unshaven." I dunno what movie this supposedly happened on so I can't judge if Tracy pulled it off, but I think Bette Davis performs a similar trick here. Davis has never been known for her traditional ravishing beauty, but in the first two acts of Mr. Skeffington she plays the part of a woman used to getting what she wants thanks to her beauty so well that I never for a moment questioned it. She quite simply acts beautiful, despite the off-beat nature of her real facial features. This makes it all the more stunning when in classic Davis fashion her character ends up ravaged by disease, losing her hair and the rest of her good looks. A fantastic performance that reminds me why this woman is a star.
