Two questions

I loved this movie as Bette Davis and Claude Rains are two of my favorites but I do have 2 questions.

Why is the movie not titled "Mrs. Skeffington?"

And the second is why do men keep proposing to her after she is a married woman?

reply

I think at some point in the movie, she actually does divorce her husband because they refer to a settlement where she got half his fortune.

reply

Yes, they do eventually divorce but the proposals took place from the time she was married until the divorce. On their second (or first) anniversary Mr. Skeffington was even chuckling as he handed one of the suitors his hat as he was departing (after once again having his proposal turned down).

Maybe it was because she was just SO beautiful men couldn't control themselves.

Thanks for answering.

reply

Yes, it was because Fanny was so beautiful.

But also, I think, it's a device to show how cynical everyone was about the perceived "real purpose" (= money) of her marriage. In other words, nobody seemed to take Job seriously, as a MAN - including Fanny.

Another reason might be that they simply enjoyed the titillation of the flirt, knowing full well that she would not - COULD not - marry them.

reply

I think you have nailed it with your interpretation. The emphasis on "MAN" and "COULD explain a lot too." Thank you kindly

Because Hollywwod people, even in the olden-golden times, weren't always as bright as their neon lights...?

In my opinion, it should have been clled SKEFFINGTON. Period.
It would've been perfect.

"Why is the movie not titled "Mrs. Skeffington?"

Maybe because they kept the title of the book from which it was made?
