Claude Rains and Bette Davis made 4 or 5 films together, I wonder if they were friends - they always complemented each other so well on the screen.

I think they were good friends. And Bette Davis always said that Claude Rains was her favourite co-star.
shareI think that by the time Mr. Skeffington was made, each of them was powerful enough to veto a lead co-star. That would lead me to believe their frienship was genuine, although each was enough of a professional that perhaps they would have realized the benefit of working together even if they hated each other.

Bette Davis adored Claude, whom she called "the gorgeous Mr. Rains." He was a formal and very endearing gentleman who was difficult to know. Robert Osborne once asked Bette if Claude (a notorious womanizer), had ever made a sexual pass at her. Bette said, "Heavens no! I was 19 years younger than Claude, much too old for him!" Apparently Claude liked the young ones.
Bette visited Claude at his Pennsylvania farm at least twice over the years and spent some time with him there. To me, it seems quite obvious that Bette was attracted to Claude, but that he wasn't going to pursue her because she wasn't his type and for other reasons.
A few years ago, I visited the USC library which houses the Warner Bros, archives and there was an older woman there who was a bit player at Warners. She told me how wonderful Claude Rains was, how his voice was the single most wonderful thing she'd ever heard and ended our discussion by saying, "Claude Rains was probably the sexiest man I ever met, and I've met plenty."
That spoke volumes!
I wish I had asked her more about this, but I wasn't that into Rains at that time.
