Three Oscar Nominations

I had seen bits of this film prior but managed to catch the entire film this evening on AMC. Glad I did. Not your typical GIs vs. Nazis film but an interesting mix of nationalities pitted against a more foreboding enemy - the desert. I came across some trivia while on-line.

Film was nominated for three Oscars in 1943:

Cinematography (Black & White)- Rudolph Maté.
Maté was very busy in the early forties as he received Oscar nominations for five straight years (1940-1944). His other noms included Hitchock's "Foreign Correspondent" and "The Pride of the Yankees."

Sound - John Livadary
Livadary is tied for second place for most nominations (16) for Best Sound with Colonel Nathan Levinson. Only Kevin O'Connell (18) has more noms.

Supporting Actor - J. Naish
Naish, who played the compassionate Giuseppe, was also nominated two years later for his role in "A Medal For Benny."

Not your typical GIs vs. Nazis film but an interesting mix of nationalities

Maybe I was reading too much into it, but I took the people from different coutries, including the Italian and German prisoners, each as a metaphor for their own nation involved in the conflict. The smart, practical Bogey American, learned Brit, conflicted Italian, dasterdly Nazi, etc.
