There's a scene where Slezak and the old Prince are speaking German, and telling OHara what to do. I suppose we're to infer they're telling her to lure Garfield. But I was wondering what they were actually saying. Anyone know? Do they threaten her in some way? Even though it's implied at the end she has no family in Germany, it seems she was working against her will in that scene.
I don't know what they said, but whatever they told her to do it appeared that she didn't want to do it, for it would harm "Kit", who she apparently fell in love with while working for them. Yet, in the end she betrayed that portrayal by getting on the plane after lying to him that she would meet him elsewhere. The cops were laughing at him for being duped, for unbeknownst to "Kit" they had put a tail on her.
Don't blame Kit for falling for Toni. I'm sitting here watching the movie and she had my head spinning and heart jumping.
My gawd.....was Maureen attractive back then. Plus, it was good seeing her acting in a role other than those predictable formulaic movies of the '50's and 60's, especially with John Wayne.
she was pretty amazing. And the cute blonde sister was nothing to sneeze at either. But I'd still like to get a translation. I didnt like the film the first time I watched it - there were too many characters and red herrings to follow, and I couldnt accept the maguffin would really matter so much. I enjoyed it much more on subsequent viewings. It's really a horror-noir. You dont see too many films where the hero is mentally scarred from torture and partially insane -- the scene when Garfield is banging on the piano is nightmarish. Sure, Bogie's heart is broken in Casablanca, but he's not hearing voices.
