This Should Have Been Great
But it falls far short imo. The movie's atmosphere and Garfield's character effective drew me in. However, the muddled storyline, some questionable casting and scenes, and mediocre direction don't allow the film to work. O'Hara and Beaumont are totally miscast and therefore are never convincing in their sinister roles. Patricia Morison isn't given enough to do for us to learn what her role is in the plot. There never is a convincingly clear understanding for why Garfield's character is being pursued. It was not clear to me how Garfield's character fit in with this high society crowd. We could have used some more background on the characters. There's a number of confusing scenes. Examples: There's a seemingly key conversation in German between Dr Skaas and the prince that should have been subtitled and therefore if you don't know German you're out of luck of knowing what the conversation was about. In another, Anton forces his way into Whitney's apartment late at night to announce that the police are outside or see that she's okay or some other reason. For all of the shortcomings, I enjoyed the movie. Unfortunately, I thought it had a lot more potential.
