It's really quite an odd story
I'm not sure I actually like it. It has its moments but the overwhelming, maudlin sentimentality and self sacrifice to fit in with the (supposed) conventions of the time are more than a bit cringeworthy. I do like a lot of the support cast - Ilka Chase, Claude Rains, Lee Patrick in a small part and Mary Wickes - and I thought Janis Wilson as the 'shared' daughter was interesting.
I read that this film finished shooting two weeks late and Paul Henreid was on the set of Casablanca the next morning so I guess Claude Rains was close behind - they sure kept busy in those days. Heck of a contrast moving from Bette Davis to Ingrid Bergman as the leading lady. In fact it's odd the films were effectively filmed at the same time, in style and tone they feel about a decade apart.
