I watched this late last night on TV but since it was on so late i fell asleep half way through last thing i saw Clem was leaving on his boat with all the other men when i woke up Mrs. Miniver was in her kitchen with a german. anyone can fill in the blanks and tell me what happens at the end? it would be extremely helpful as i doubt it will play again anytime soon.
Unfortunately, you missed quite a bit! I just watched it tonight as a "rental" from Netflix. If you're not a member of Netflix or Blockbuster's similiar program where they mail movies, Hollywood Video might have it in their Academy Award section, since it won Best Picture in 1942. Anyway, here's my best effort at a summary through to the end but be warned! It contains SPOILERS!!! Clem left on the boat with many other Englishmen, also in small boats, to rescue soldiers stranded at Dunkirk. He is gone five days. Oldest son, Vin, is also gone on his first mission as a pilot. While alone, Mrs. Miniver finds a wounded German soldier outside her house. He has a gun and uses it to gain entry into the family's home and to force her to supply him with food. In her kitchen, he looses conscientiousness. She grabs his gun and calls the police. They arrive promptly and take him away. Her husband returns shortly thereafter, is fine, and later finds out that she singlehandedly, got the German soldier to the authorities. Vin also returns soon, safe & sound. While on leave, he marries Carol. They honeymoon, return home, and while the annual rose award ceremony is going on in their town, festivities quickly end due to approaching German war planes. Vin is dropped off by car by both Mrs. Miniver and Carol at the base to join other fighter pilots. Mrs. Miniver and Carol must drive home without the use of their headlights. Bombing and fighting is going on above them, with some planes crashing nearby and stray bullets flying through the air. SPOILER next: Carol is suddenly hit by one of these bullets while in the car. She is conscious but not well. Mrs. Miniver gets her back to their home but Carol dies before an ambulance can arrive to help her. Vin comes home and is obviously saddened by the loss of his new wife. Others who lived in town have also died. The community assemble in the church and the vicar gives a moving sermon in an attempt to explain the apparent senselessness and tradgedy of innocent lives that had been lost that night. (Read "Noteable Quotes" for Mrs. Miniver at this website for just about the whole speech!) The movie ends with his sermon. Hope that helps but definitely try to rent it! It deserves to be on AFI's 100 Most Inspirational Movies!
What a coincidence. I just finished watching it as a Netflix rental, too!
Please remember to mark your post as SPOILERS to warn casual readers that your post is giving away everything in the movie. (I believe the asker of the question indicated that he woke up to see the German in the kitchen. He didn't miss too much).
Okay, thanks for the tip. I assumed that since the subject line was "the end" and she specifically asked how it ended, anyone who read my reply knew where it was going. Maybe not! I edited my reply and added SPOILERS throughout.
I wish the follow-up movie, The Miniver Story, was available through netflix or elsewhere. Maybe it's not on DVD yet. Too bad there's not a way to let someone, somewhere, know what people might be interested in putting on DVD. Does anyone know?
thank you very much! it played late at night and i just couldnt stay awake, although i thought that what i saw of it was amazing. i did want to know the plot line as i did fall asleep before the german was in the kitchen and decided to go to bed right after. i would rent but sadly blockbuter majorly sucks, in montreal anyways, and the only other option is videotron which is even worse.
"The Miniver Story" is shown today, 11/1/06, at 4:00 p.m. on the Turner Classic Movie Channel. I didn't like it however and don't plan to see it. I just posted something about it on IMDB under "The Miniver Story" but it contains major spoilers and the ending to the movie is revealed. I felt it was a poor sequel.
