Charles Boyer

Why does the girl in the train station tell her mother that she wants the book by Charles Boyer "Why I hate women"? What's all that about?

In Wilder's bio, Nobody's Perfect, he'd had a bad experience with Boyer during the filming of Hold Back the Dawn. Wilder wrote a scene that would have had Boyer talking to a cockroach in cheap motel room out of boredom. Boyer thought it was outrageous & went to the director to have the scene cut. I'm a big fan of both men & would like see the film, despite its troubles, but it's not available. :(

So to answer your query, it was an inside industry insult.

I was thinking it sounds like somebody with a lot of pull in Hollywood had a bone to pick with Boyer. And after reading your post about Boyer and Wilder I can see what happened and why this scene was put in one of Wilder's films. To be honest, I'm surprised it doesn't happen more often in films.
