Who would you cast in a modern remake?
I would cast Paul Rudd as the Major and Reese Witherspoon as the Minor.
shareI would cast Paul Rudd as the Major and Reese Witherspoon as the Minor.
shareI was thinking of some of the smaller actresses around.
Ellen Page (5'1") might be too young at 22.
Natalie Portman (5'3") is 27, and could work well.
Keira Knightley (a slim 5'7") is 24.
Certainly easy to picture them looking young and having all the boys drooling over.
I think it'd make sense to up the fake age to 14, because 12 seems rather young and uncomfortable. Also, despite certain "swedish stock" 14 year old girls can be rather developed, but 12 not so much.
Ellen Page looks like a perpetual teenager, brilliant choice

Ellen Page still looks ridiculously young, I'm always thinking she'd look 14.

No one.
Amanda Bynes and George Clooney.
shareUmm...its been remade. Watch Never Been Kissed.
shareThis movie doesn't really lend itself to a re-make due to modern attitudes, etc.
For example: Children's dress today is essentially no different for an adult, especially for girls.
25-30 years ago and beyond, there were milestones on the road to adulthood for a young girl-- being allowed to wear make up, wearing nylons and high heels, wearing certain hairstyles, being allowed to date.
All of that has gone right out the window. You now have 10 year old girls dressing and looking like hookers. 12 and 13 year olds look like they're 20 and act like they're 30.
That old fashioned line between childhood and adulthood is a big part of the movie. It doesn't exist any more.
If you take a 22 year old woman and say to her I want you to dress like you're 13, you probably couldn't tell the difference between the before and after.
Likewise, as far as attitudes and how people would treat her, there wouldn't be a big change either. Not like there used to be.
Because of all this, it can't really be made. No one would buy in to the concept.
Plus the fact everyone is so hyper sensitive and politically correct. There would be cries of child porn the moment the project was announced. No studio would touch a remake with a ten foot pole.

Take it from someone who works in a school, that is absolutely not true (and a very cynical view of the world). There is definitely a difference in clothing worn by children and clothing worn by adults, and people do not treat 12 year olds like adults. In fact, most educators would tell you there is a crisis of infantalization going on in most schools. Parents baby their children well past a reasonable age nowadays.
Still, you're right, you could never do a remake with the character at the same age. Sure the situation is convoluted, but I'm sure modern day writers could figure out a way to smooth it out so that it's more believable to a modern audience. No, the reason you can't do "The Major and the Minor" now is because it was key that the Major *was* attracted to the Minor, even though he creeped himself out. The scene in his office is amusing because he notices how attractive she is. The Major and the Minor was fine THEN, in 1942, and we can watch that movie with innocent eyes as was intended. It's amusing because a grown man wouldn't knowingly pursue a child that age! Ha-Ha! What a dilemma!
However, we can't make the same movie now and unlearn what we know about the world. It would be on everyone's mind. The very fact of finding her attractive in her 12 year old state would disturb people. That will make the audience think of "Lolita", and when you're trying to get people to enjoy themselves at a light comedy, that is not a story you want popping into their heads.
I'd cast Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis with Jerry as the faux 12 year old. I'd call it "You're Never Too Young" and for good measure I'd also cast Diana Lynn.
They did it in 1955.
This movie could never have a remake. 1942 was a different time. Apparently audiences at that time had no problem with a man spending the night with a 12 year old girl he didn't know. Nowadays, unless a man was a pedophile, this would never happen because it is totally inappropriate.
shareWill Ferrell and Miley Cyrus.
