so overlooked

I love this movie and I always think that Ginger Rogers did so much better in movies without Fred Astaire although they were special together(their movies were pretty much the same to me: bicker, argue, fall in love). I saw this on TCM last month and the introducer guy (forgot his name) said that Ginger Rogers told him that she was a bit upset how Billy Wilder never mentioned this movie as one of his greats. I think this movie is one of Wilder's best.
and dont you think Ginger Rogers in Bachelor Mother was a good movie too?

I agree with you. Bachelor Mother has always been one of my favorites. Than again, I'm a huge fan of Ginger Rodgers.

Both of these movies are so entertaining because Ginger was a terrific comedienne with impeccable timing. She's all at once glamorous, funny, sexy, and cute. Just look at her scenes with the kid sister of her rival(who is on to her masquerade) in "The Major and the Minor" - absolutely right on the money. I think she's at her best in those kinds of movies, although she could handle drama and tragedy ("The Primrose Path","Kitty Foyle" and "Stage Door"). I believe she could have been known as a strong dramatic actress had the studios been willing to give her more of those kinds of roles, but she was so successful in the lighter fare, that's what she mostly got.

To me Bachelor Mother and Major and the Minor have really similar plot structures, she leaves the midwest to go to New York and finds herself striking out. She finds out that its not where she is but who she becomes that makes so much of a difference. Her strong personality and intellect win more for her than beauty and charm.

~ Major & the minor, Kitty Foyle, Bachelor Mother and stage mother and others are my favorites of Ginger Rogers.

Yes, I just watched this movie for the first time and I thought it was wonderful. You do need to majorly suspend disbelief to enjoy it, but it's charming, cute, and funny. Definitely very underrated.
