Why does Lucy hate her sister. She says "my sister is a stinker" but only explains that she is preventing her fiance from transferring to active duty. However, Lucy has no relationship with the Major. The only motive from what Lucy tells us is jealousy, but there has been no foundation for that. Anyone have a clue.
She may not have any relationship with the Major, but that doesn't mean Lucy can't hate what Pamela is doing. Major Kirby hates his current job and wants to join the war effort, and Pamela is actively preventing her fiancee from pursuing the career path he wants just for her own selfish gains. Modern critics defend Pamela, saying she's just concerned for the Major's safety, but I disagree. Major Kirby is a grown man capable of making his own choices, good or bad, and Pamela should respect that. She has no right whatsoever to keep him from doing what he wants to do. Devising machinations to keep someone where they're unhappy just because it makes your life easier is the height of unforgivable selfishness.
I find Lucy's moral compass and concern for Major Kirby all the more admirable because it DOESN'T affect her, but she still knows it's wrong.
At the dance when Kirby and Pamela find out that Washington has accepted his request to return to service, the truth comes out. Pamela wanted him to stay where he was for purely selfish reasons. She obviously didn't love him, she went and married someone else almost immediately. Lucy was right to want to stop her, there is no defending Pamela.
No credible reason even if she is a snob and thwarting her fiancé's military career; basically that line is there to explain why Lucy is helping Susan get the Major.
~ I found Pamela as selfish, greedy and inconsiderate. Besides Lucy knew in her heart that Pamela didn't deserve him.

I felt Lucy was very disrespectful to her elder sister, considering she was taking care of her. I am assuming their parents died. Although she has a right to disagree with her sister's actions
