TCM is a gift to anyone who likes great movies (and I cannot believe that Larceny, Inc. has its own message board)

Was on again yesterday. Thanks TCM! This ought to come on more often before Christmas. It's charming, a nice turn for Robinson, and while the plot doesn't specifically revolve around a Christmas theme, the outcome has a nice Christmas mood. I've never seen Small Time Crooks, but I did think several times last night while watching it that, in the right hands, this would make a good re-make. Hollywood's gonna be hurting for scripts when this strike gets over, so how about finding a few top-notch actors and making a go of a modern version? I haven't seen many re-makes as good as the originals (The In-Laws comes to mind, because it lacked the original's chemistry between Arkin and Falk) but this one has the makings of one.

I echo the thoughts of those who have voiced their delight with this overlooked comedy. As always, Edward G. Robinson dominates the screen in one of his rare comic outings, but once again bringing his usual verve to the role. As his cohorts in crime, Broderick Crawford and Ed Brophy do more than their share in adding to the laughs. Was there any picture that Brophy did NOT brighten with his delightful brand of Irish humor? Bringing up support are a whole cast of Warner Brothers stalwarts, including Jane Wyman, Anthony Quinn, Harry Davenport, & Grant Mitchell, all contributing to making this flick into a sparkling little gem!

reply

Well said and yes Ed Brophy is spectacular.

BUT ..... Woody Allen got his inspiration from Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's "The Red-headed League." The young(slim) Broderick Crawford favors Peyton Manning. lol
