Watching it now on TCM (2/15/2016)

The crash of the bomber was very well done. It looked real, and having the plane stop when it runs into a large tree, and the tree falls over onto the plane, was a very good special effect.

Me too. I've enjoyed this movie since I was a kid back in the early 60s. 'Hogans Heroes' like yes and, for me at least, combined with 'The Wizard of Oz', 'Arsenic and Old Lace' and 'Gilligan's Island' meets "Stalag 17" and "The Great Escape".
Why "The Wizard of Oz' ? For some reason, maybe its the long German coats, I don't know, but I'm always reminded of the Cowardly Lion and crews scene when they take on the witch and her guards.

The fake German language is pretty bad, the old "stoppen de floppen" rule of Hollywood German.

I sure that, back in 1942, theater goers were cheering as the good guys outsmarted and outfought the nazis at every turn.

This is an Errol Flynn swashbuckler with Nazis instead of Pirates. The action is pretty much nonstop. Very entertaining. The good guys are very good and the bad guys are very stupid. You know who to cheer for in this movie and in the end the good guys win. Unpretentious and very straightforward.

Very well said! I just finished watching this movie for the first time and I loved it! War movies are not my favorite; the theme is sad and there isn't much of a story; basically one character gets killed off after another.

I thought this movie would be similar to Stalag 17; very few, if any, action scenes. Boy, was wrong. This movie was a non-stop, edge of your seat, intense adventure. The guys didn't always have the best of luck but they used every opportunity to keep moving forward toward their goal. They were different nationalities; they didn't always agree with each other; and they lost a few men along the way; but they had respect for each other and worked together well.

The only reason I recorded the movie was to see Errol Flynn and Ronald Reagan; two of my favorites. I was surprised to find that Arthur Kennedy, Alan Hale, Nancy Coleman, and Raymond Massey were also in it. They're all actors I've enjoyed in other films so I was happy to see them all cast in this movie together. They all did a great job; as did the writer(s) and the director.

Woman, man! That's the way it should be Tarzan. [Tarzan and his mate]

I cannot believe that in 2016 you would write this??? That was about the most unreal and silliest plane crash I have ever scene in a film.

I guess my tastes in special effects movie scenes is different from yours.

The only excuse I can offer for not thinking exactly as you do is that I must not be as smart as you are.
