Can someone help me I'm confused about one part of the movie

At the church when maleva is talking to the minister priest about not having a funeral for her son without prayer confuses me greatly because why wouldn't she have a funeral with prayer for her dead son because he's not a werewolf no more he's dead.

Different religions maybe? Or maybe she wanted to use the " the way you walked was phoney." speech?

She was a gypsy and they have different customs.

I am pretty sure it's, "The way you walked was Thorny." Not phony. That actually sounds funny.
