is the DVD version in widescreen?
Can anyone who owns the new DVD version of "Sgt. York" tell me if it is a widescreen aspect ratio? I just got a new LCD TV and hope this is not a fullscreen version. Thanks.

shareThe aspect ratio listed here is 1.37:1, which is essentially the same as "full-screen" (1.33:1). Very few films were made in widescreen before about 1950, though there were experimental exceptions like Abel Gance's Napoleon (1927) and Raoul Walsh's The Big Trail (1931).
shareActually Abel Gance's 'Napoleon' was only partially shown in an experimental wide screen format, the majority of it was standard 35mm. The first film actually shown entirely in wide screen was 'Happy Days' (1929). By the way, 'The Big Trail' was released in 1930, not 1931. 'The Bat Whispers'(1930), which would be Bob Kane's inspiration for Batman, was filmed in 65mm and 35mm versions (the 35mm version is not cropped from the 65mm, but from takes shot on entirely different cameras, and from different takes. The DVD with both versions is available and well worth watching.
