SOUNDTRACK

Does anyone know if there is a soundtrack for this movie?

reply

Yes, there is. I heard it when I saw the film. (Sorry, couldn't resist.)

Now whether the soundtrack is available on CD is another matter. All I can find from standard commercial sources is the "Overture," which is part of a two-CD set, "Hollywood Goes to War," on the Silva America label. You can get it from Tower.com or amazon.com or similar outlets.

Apparently, no one has bothered to compile a performable orchestral suite from the "Sergeant York" score, possibly because it is rather derivative (based largely on traditional American hymns, Appalachian folk songs, and patriotic standards) compared to Max Steiner's more celebrated original scores. Still, the score is effective and a short orchestral suite, 10-15 minutes, would be effective as well. Indeed, someone could do a nice CD of suites based on Steiner's wartime scores (including "Casablanca," the score of which has been released, as well as excerpted in some recorded suites). I would very much like a recording of the stirring "aviation march" (I don't know the actual title) that Steiner featured in "Dive Bomber" and later in "Air Force."
