Shoulder Braid

In the New York scenes...Cooper is wearing a braid on his left shoulder. Is this related to the Congressional Medal Of Honor ?

Are you referring to this?: http://media.liveauctiongroup.net/i/9882/10657966_2.jpg

Here's a photo of the real Alvin C. York with the same attachment on his left shoulder: http://u5aq4437zm120nck735bj1c6.wpengine.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/Sergeant-Alvin-York2-e1422812391133.jpeg

And another: https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/4/41/Alvin_C._York_1919.jpg

If so, that is actually a chain which is connected to his trench whistle: https://c1.staticflickr.com/9/8442/7803641490_6d75467fa0_z.jpg

Another photo of the whistle itself: http://i.ebayimg.com/00/s/MTIwMFgxNjAw/z/JSwAAOSwNSxVS0m6/$_35.JPG?set_id=880000500F

Note that in all the photos the hook is attached to the button of the epaulette on his left shoulder, The chain hangs down and then into his left front pocket, which is where his whistle is kept.

Hope this helps.

When did ribbons replace regular medals ? I see from the photo you sent York was not wearing his Congressional Medal Of Honor. I guess later on they had a chest ribbon to represent it.

All medals (including the Medal of Honor) have a corresponding ribbon which is the same color and design as the cloth that holds the medal. But there are also ribbons that have no medal.

Medals are usually worn for ceremonial or special occasions where the full sized medals are worn on the left breast and the ribbons that have no medal are worn on the right. Otherwise, when in regular or working uniform all ribbons will be worn on the left breast.

Here is a photo of three Vietnam era medals. The medals are on the bottom and their corresponding ribbons are above them. If the individual was wearing their regular working uniform (except utilities or combat uniform) they would wear the ribbons. If they wearing a dress uniform they would wear the full medal.

Does that make sense?

Were they using corresponding ribbons in WW1 ? When York came home in the movie he had no medals or ribbons on.

Thanks again.

I'm pretty sure WWI medals had corresponding ribbons but why they didn't show them in the movie is unknown to me.

The award is correctly called the Medal of Honor; there is no "Congressional" Medal of Honor.
