Love Ford, hate this movie.

HGWMV is easily the worst of Ford's classics and a prime example of too much plot. Events, characters come and go: we won't see characters for upwards of 30 minutes. No storyline is ever really fully developed. Valley is basically a technically sound soap opera sans the quirkiness and charms of Sirk. The longest 118 minutes spent in my life. The Grapes of Wrath was such a better adaptation, as it had a pulse and fully fleshed characters: not a half assed plot and random melodrama. Wrath builds, this hops about.

I agree with the original poster. I read so much about how great this film was, but me and the person I watched it with both found it quite meandering and without much emotional impact. And Maureen had way too little screen time!

While I enjoyed the film in terms of acting and storyline, at times it felt as if a point was being forced across to the audience. This point being that we should stick by traditional values, for example lead by Christ's example. To me it came off as propaganda in retaliation of the Axis forces beliefs.

This is exactly right. No focus in the movie, just a bunch of different scenes set in a small coal mining town strung together.
