What time period?

I couldn't figure what years the film supposedly takes place. I don't think I ever see an automobile, but since this is a poor area, maybe that isn't so strange. I haven't read the book but I know it covers many years and Huw grows to adulthood. To those that have read the book, is the time period specified? Does Huw end up in World War I?

"We're fighting for this woman's honor, which is more than she ever did."

I just watched tis movie again last night on TCM for the first time in several years, so it's fresh in my mind.

The dialogue when Mr. Morgan prays for the singers who are going to perform in London mentions that the Queen (Victoria) is elderly - so this is late 1890's, possible 1900.
