John Ford's comment - one of them
As the wedding party is leaving the church, Mr. Gruffydd stands up the hill- near the back of the church, hands on hips, in silhouette. He watches his love married to the son of the mine owner, and then heads back to the church.
According to a feature on the DVD, ace cinematographer Arthur Miller asked Ford at the time if Ford wanted a close-up of Pidgeon standing there.
Ford replied. "No. If I did, they'd [the editor, probably] use it."
Ford knew Pidgeon was much more memorable to his audience seen only from a distance.
