I think it's fair to say the family lost everything...with the exception of their memories.

I saw three dusters...inside the dusters were three men, inside the men were three bullets.

He went to the mine when he heard there was a cave-in. He helped Huw find Mr. Morgan. I don't believe he was actually seen leaving. Even if he did leave, he could have come back. They say there are 3 sequels to the novel this is based on, so maybe the answer is there.

To me the surest sign that the preacher will not pursue Angharad is that he gives his father's watch to Huw. Therefore he is not only going to wed Angharad, he knows he will be alone for the rest of his life and will never have a son to leave it to. Huw is the closest relation to a son he will ever have, so he gives Huw the watch. I always thought it was one of the saddest parts of the movie.
