$2.59

Roy Earle pulls into a gas station and tells the proprietor to give him 10 gallons of gas. Later he gives him a five dollar bill. The guy comes back with change. "41 and this makes it 4 and this makes it 5".

$2.59 for 10 gallons of gas.

Them was the days.

reply

Yeah! "Them was the days"!

And that was at a "Last Chance" station way out in the Sierra boonies!

"Them days" lasted right up to the early 70's. I remember pumping .25/9 gasoline into my 26 mpg VW bug in 1971. And cigarettes were 3 packs for a dollar & beer was $1.15 a sixer! Life WAS good!

reply

Yeah, the station attendant seemed real excited to take in $2.59!

Later, notice how Bogart is irked when he has to pay $.50 for a pack of cigarettes...

reply

The first time I bought a pack of cigarettes (Red Marlboro) in New York City, in 1980, they were $0.75 a pack. Now they are around $14.00, from what I hear : )

reply

Except that in 1941 the average income was something like $1,750 a year.

reply

And the coins were actually silver, not the pot-metal in today's cash.

What I had in mind was boxing the compass.
