Bogart's car make?
Hi,
What kind of car is Bogart driving in this movie? I think it's the same as the one in The Big Sleep.
Thanks,
Paul

High Sierra, Big Sleep , and possibly others had Bogie driving a 38 Plymouth coupe, which pleased me because my parent's car was a 38 'mouth (sedan). It was really an underpowered, unstylish, iron pile, but was the car in which I learned to drive. In my 16 year old mind, Dad's uncool choice of wheels was redeemed by the model's presence in a movie or two.
A few years ago while wathing, I believe, High Sierra, there was a goof where, in
at least one scene, the 38 Plymouth coupe became a 37 model. There's a subtle difference in the hood oranament and lower grille between the two models, the 38
ornament having a shape as a large chrome horizontal teardrop, the 37 "teardrop"
sort of droops down in front a few inches.
Dont argue with me. Who else would remember such details but a 16 year old male
who learned to drive in, and who drove across the nation and back in, his parents
1938 Plymouth 4 door sedan. The radio had two somewhat flat chrome knobs about the size of a nickel that were hard to grasp and turn.
By the way, in Big Sleep, Bogie flips down a panel under the dash where he has
a pistol hidden. The movie's dashboard and instruments are correct for the model, only ours, for years, had a dead fly behind the glass, feet up.

Yeah, that "flip down" gun holder was real "James Bond" stuff for the '40's.
Thanks for the info on the '38 Plymouth.
Patrick-
ALL the Plymouths I ever drove except for the 1955s and later, equipped with the V-8 power plant ,were real dogs. I swear my first (1949 2-door , 3-on-the-tree) Plymouth was slower on a sunny day because the weight of its shadow dragging along the pavement slowed it down!
My dad owned a '51 Cranbrook with the same lame flat-head six that I had in my '49. My brother owned a new '52 sedan with the same engine. As I recall the old Plymouth flat sixes were rated optimistically at about 80-85 hp and displayed no discernable torque at any speed.
The only positive was that the old MOPARs were pretty well theft-immune. Nobody wanted to swipe one what with all the 1955+ Crown Vics and Bel Aires available around my home town. I could park it downtown and leave the keys in it. When I came back, I might be apt to find that someone had opened the car and tossed in another set of Plymouth keys.
I found it surprising that the producers would put Bogart, among the very coolest stars of Hollywood in the '40s, in such a ratty car. He drove a Plymouth coupe in several of his films. Perhaps it was to identify Bogart's character as absolutely not caring about having nice things; he was too busy seeking justice for his clients/self/friends.

the Museum of Lone Pine: Bogart's '37 Plymouth Coupe from 'High Sierra'.
