This really bugged the s&^t out of me. He has his face plastered all over the papers and he robs a convenient store? That was so f^%kin' stupid! I thought he was supposed to be a seasoned criminal. This action did not jell with the written character at all! Ruined the film for me truth be told.

It took you that long to realize that? The whole robbery was total armature hour, and he was supposed to be the expert. They go in there with hammers and chisels and make all kinds of noise. I'm not sure what they had available in 1940, but I'm guessing they could have found some strong acid that could melt anything that could be popped with a hammer and chisel.
The whole movie was kind of silly that way. Here we have this hardened con....With a heart of gold. They spent so much time with him being such a really great guy....Except when he occasionally needs to shoot someone......But hey! He's really a nice guy so we can't hold that against him......Almost like a spoof...
That wasn't the only example of stupidity on Bogie's part. Pretty much everything he did was amateur.
I liked the movie, but Bogie didn't act anything like a seasoned criminal. He was a sap all the way to the end. Didn't prevent me from enjoying the movie though.
