Thoughts on Casting

1st off - Walter Huston as the devil was awesome! And different from anything he'd ever played. I don't know why, but his version is so creepy and insidious. You really feel the evil coming off of him.

James Craig - could not make Jabez likable for me. Even at the beginning when we are supposed to think he's such a good guy, he's still kind of a jerk. I don't see this dramatic change from good to bad and back to good. If I was Anne Shirley, I'd let Simone Simon have him

Anne Shirley - It's been mentioned previously, but wow does she look like Olivia de Havilland! Particularly Olivia as Melanie in Gone with the Wind. The scene where Anne gives birth and they put the baby by her in the bed, it's almost identical to the one with Olivia's birth in GWTW. It's not just her looks, it's her voice and mannerisms. You have to wonder if she was channeling the character of Melanie.
