Who could play who (and especially Rebecca)?

I enjoyed reading the casting proposals in the event of a remake (altough I perfectly agree that this movie should not have one).

I too think that
- Colin Firth, Ralph Fiennes or Christian Bale would be perfect as Maxim (though Christian might seem too young for the character)
- Rupert Everett as Favell
- Helen Mirren or Maggie Smith as the sinister Mrs. Danvers
- I am not sure though who could play the second Mrs. de Winter (Rachel Weisz or Emily Blunt maybe?)

And my final question is who could play Rebecca? She is definitely more powerful without being portrayed on the screen, but I couldn't resist wondering how she looked like and who could play (let's say in a prequel :) the incarnation of a beautiful, strong, charming but purely evil woman. The only name I could come up with is Mary-Louise Parker (I'm dismissing the age).

Carey Mulligan for 2nd Mrs de Winter.

Rebecca? Hm, maybe Kate Beckinsale?

Your future is all used up...

reply

I second that.
kate becinsale would make a great rebecca.
finised the book today and liked it very much.

carey mulligan is great as the second mrs de winter.

OMG, Colin Furth would be a perfect Maxim!
And I think Judi Dench would make a wonderful Mrs. Danvers.
A young Catherine Zeta-Jones would have made a good Rebecca.
Can't think of anyone for the lead, except she would have to be a pale, slight, very young English actress.

reply

I agree 100%. Carey Mulligan would be just perfect.

I think Karl Urban could do well as Maxim. He's old enough for the role I think, but still very handsome, and he handles the surly look very well.

And maybe Odette Annable as Rebecca. Although, I would actually prefer never seeing her. No flashbacks or anything.

As for the 2nd Mrs. de Winter...that's a tough one. Can't think of anyone at the moment.

reply

akina real, my picks (both have left us) are Dana Wynter and Jean Simmons.

I/Second Miss De Winter- Carey Mulligan, Rachel Hurd Wood, Ruth Wilson (Jane in the 2006 bbc Jane Eyre)
Maxim- in terms of pure acting ability alone Daniel Day Lewis. For someone who looks and could act the part Colin Firth, Ralph Fiennes or Rupert Everett or Benedict Cumberbatch/ Michael Fassbender if they wanted to cast someone a bit younger to appeal to a younger more modern crowd.
Miss Danvers- Dame Judi Dench, Dame Helen Mirren or Viola Davies (It'd be a different interpretation and she is a fantastic actress)
Jack Favell- Ben Barnes or James McAvoy or Gerard Butler
Miss Van Hopper- Kim Catrall (with a bit of heavy makeup to make her look a bit older), Susan Sarandon
Beatrice- Helena Bonaham Carter
Giles- Richard Grant
Frank- I always liked the idea of Bob Hoskins playing the role he has the likeability to do it / Sir Ben Kinsley/Hugh Laurie

It;s officially getting remade and I have a sick feeling that they'll cast Mia Wasikowska or even worse Kristen Stewart as the lead

I would love to see a remake of this 1940 masterpiece on the big screen, although the 1979 BBC version with Jeremy Brett is a superior adapatation, but I pray your fears do not come into fruition. Kristen Stewart as the lead would be a downright disaster! There are plenty of established leading men for Maxim so I feel the studio could take a chance on an unknown, young actress who delivers a knockout performance as the second Mrs. de Winter.

reply

If Kristen Stewart is cast as the Second Mrs. DeWinter, the world is going to implode.

...rolling downhill like a snowball headed for hell...

reply

I don't know who would be the worst, Stewart or the talent-less Keira Knightley.

Not only would this role need someone with genuine acting talent, the actress should also be unknown, or relatively unknown, and very young. Rebecca is a coming-of-age story as well as a romance, and a 'star' who's full of herself might not be very convincing as the shy, retiring nobody the Second has to be at the beginning of the film. Remember, this character doesn't even have a name.

And, Rebecca should not be seen at all, only imagined and referred to.

reply

I actually like Mia Wasikowska ...she would do a good job. Her and Carey Mulligan are the only two big name actresses I can see playing the role. Carey might not because of the Great Gatsby (the character is a tad bit similar)

reply

I'm really looking forward to this if the casting is done right ................ 1) Maxim - Michael Fassbender would bring the right amount of dangerous sexiness, but, vulnerability to the part ................ 2) The 2rd Mrs De Winter - that's tougher. The obvious choices are Keira Knightley and Carey Mulligan. Or Jennifer Lawrence or Rachel McAdams (please not Kristen Stewart) .............. 3) Mrs Danvers - Helen Mirren ............ 4) Frank - Matthew MacFadyen ............. 5) Jack Favell - Toby Stephens has the perfect smirk for this part ............!. 6) Rebecca - I don't think she should really be shown ............. 7) They should create a part for Judi Dench as she HAS to be in there somewhere

reply

Ha! Fassbender would be perfect!!!

reply

I would love to see Meryl Streep as Mrs. Danvers (then again, I would love to see Meryl in any part at all, I wouldn't laugh if you had suggested her for one of the mrs. de Winter, for example). Helen Mirren and Maggie Smith would do it just as well.

Colin Firth and Ralph Fiennes are good choices too (Christian Bale is, as you said, a bit young, but I think he could pull that off), but I would also like to see what Daniel Day Lewis would do with the part (this is more out of curiosity than anything.)

I have no other suggestions.

reply

I agree with people here saying Michael Fassbender as Maxim! And I think Evan Rachel Wood as second Mrs. de Winter.

reply

I know alot of people might be against Michael Fassbender as Maxim because of the similar Rochester role, but, he would be absolutely perfect and has all the right qualities for the part

reply

Maxim - Aaron Eckhart
Second Mrs DeWinter - Scarlett Johanson
