I'm not seeking any attention here, it's just that I wish more people my age could appreciate old classics like this. It happens to be one of my favourite Hitchcock films. Are there any others in a similar position to me?
shareI think we just assume young people aren't into classics. I always thought not many younger people would watch these films, but every time I go on the IMDB boards for old films there's always a bunch of people in their teens and 20s talking about how much they love the films.
I was 17 when I watched Rebecca. I remember during my A-levels I got really into black and white films: Rebecca, It Happened One Night, The Philadelphia Story, The Kid. At the time I thought I was one of the very very few people my age who liked these films, but IMDB made me realise that wasn't the case.
I still feel pretty isolated in my love for these films though, the only people willing to watch them with me are my parents, lol.
I don't know how long it will be up but its on youtube right now.

I do sense that younger viewers tend not to like black and white films. Go to boards for films like Nebraska and Frances Ha (both B&W if you are not familiar with them) and there seem an endless stream of complaints about the film used.
I wonder why. Is it just what people are used to? Sometimes I think it is part of the social conformity and conservatism of these times. There is little patience for deviating from the norm when it comes to entertainment.
But I do know older viewers, well people in their fifties, who prefer color, too.
As far as older viewers preferring color to black and white, yeah I know a few myself.
I asked my aunt once and she said the black and white was boring; but I think it's more than that for the older viewers like myself.
When we were kids we only had black and white TVs. My family didn't even get their first color TV until 1974. I think it's some sort of vague status symbol to think black and white film represents a poorer time in history. It doesn't of course, but the aunt I mentioned also didn't like antique furniture, she only liked modern furniture.
IDK this maybe only special to her, well, because she was special, lol.

Interesting insight in the status symbol aspect as it may be playing out here. That is true for some older viewers, I suppose. But I dont think it applies for younger viewers.
You guys got your first color TV in 1974? We got our first color TV in 1990, when I was 14.

I can understand the need for black and white in old movies due to economical reasons, or black and white used in stylistic fashion (for a famouse example: sin city). however its a fact that color is simply more detail than black and white, and if there is a choice i will always go with color. I do not shy off black and white or silent movies, but i do wish we had an even better, color copies.

According to the breakdown of the rating. Voters under 18 gave an overall average of 8.2. With the females giving it an 8.5 and the males 8.1. This is out of 285 votes.
And the 18-29 year olds demographic gave an overall 8.2. Which is out of 23275 votes. So there is a good amount of young people who enjoy this film.

this is also my favorite Hitchcock film, the cinematography is stunning and the acting superb, especially Joan Fontaine's performance.
