First of all let me just say that this movie had the best cast EVER. Even if you put Al Pacino, Robert DeNiro, Dustin Hoffman and Meryl Streep in a movie you will still be far from achieving the level of acting and quality that these three actors have individually and even more so together.
I'm just curious how old is the majority of the people who like this movie and also where they're from.
I loved this movie. recently i've been digging some classics. a big fan of James Stewart. i've been watching these lately

more more classics to watch. from 70's to 2010 i've watched almost all those major minor and rare gems. :) that also includes tons of foreign film.
I am 58 and from North Carolina, USA. I have seen this movie many times over the years, and it never gets old. I love any movie with Jimmy Stewart in it. I recently saw a movie with Jimmy and Claudette Colbert called "It's a Wonderful World". It's from 1939. I had never heard of it until it came on TCM. It's a delightful romantic comedy. If you get the chance, check it out.
Claudette Colbert + James Stewart + screwball comedy, how can I resist not to want to watch this delightful movie. I'm 38, I first saw this at a small theater with pillows on the floor in the early '80s, so I must have been about 13.
15. love the classics, hell i love film but everyone knows that without movies like bringing up baby there would be no what's up doc? (i see it as a classic). and without citizen kane and gone with the wind there would simply be know modern film
You watched Citizen Kane? Please, tell me...why is that movie such a big deal? I tried to watch it once and I found it incredibly boring, really, I couldn't stay through it. So I would really appreciate it if you could explain to me why people think is the best movie of all time. Thanks.
'A baby sleeps in all our bones so scared to be alone..'
I was bored by the story but the camera angles, script and things like that are why it's a big deal. I don't think it's the best movie of all time but it definity inspired some of them. I heard once that it was a big inspiration to Scorsese. So yes it is a big deal in terms of movie making but as entertainment? Not very much.
First of all, you need to notice the difference in phrasing between "Greatest Movies" and "Best Movies". Using the word "greatest" brings in the consideration of how influential, innovative, and ground breaking a movie is. If you read the criteria that the AFI sent out to the voters in their poll, it explicitly says that those things are supposed to count. Kane is pretty clearly at the top on those grounds. It's not just the camera angles, and deep focus and such. It is also the story telling structure, the "filmic language" that it creates. Everybody copied things that they saw in Kane (or in films that were copying from Kane). Echos of Kane's influence ring through every movie made for the last several decades.
Secondly, if you're looking for the plot to be the central focus (like it is in the majority of films) then Kane is the wrong place to look. Citizen Kane may very well be as pure an example of a "character study" movie as has ever been made. There isn't a "story" in the traditional, linear sense. The movie exists solely to examine the character and personality of Charles Foster Kane from as many different angles / points of view as possible, and as completely as possible ...... while simultaneously pointing out that nobody can ever *completely* know any person.
A fair number of people have a major preference for having a nicely defined and finite storyline that they can follow, and dislike less linear character pieces such as Mr. Holland's Opus or Diner or Citizen Kane. That's fine. It's just important to remember an individual dislike for those movies doesn't mean that they aren't good (possibly *very* good) movies. It just means that they were never aimed at your tastes / preferences.
Finally. Thank you for the reply. It's exactly what I was looking for, because now I finally understand the movie a little bit better.
And I agree, with that last thing you said. For example I don't like The Lord of the Rings but considering it won 11 Oscars then I think it's safe to say that it's a very good movie :)
Anyway, thanks again for the thorough reply.
